Barry T. Katzen, M.D., founder and medical director of Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute, is the first American to receive a prestigious honor from the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE). Dr. Katzen received the annual Gold Medal award, which he accepted to a standing ovation at the medical society’s meeting in Rome, Italy, recently.
Dr. Katzen is known worldwide for his work using angioplasty and stents to clear blockages in arteries throughout the body. He pioneered many of the methods of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, a procedure that opens blocked vessels without surgery. He was one of the first to popularize the use of clot-busting drugs for vascular disease. Dr. Katzen was part of the investigative team that led to the approval of the first intravascular stent. More recently, he is actively involved with the development of carotid artery stents and stent-grafts to repair aortic and thoracic aneurysms. Last year, Dr. Katzen led a team of doctors who repaired leg aneurysms in Vice President Dick Cheney using stents.
Dr. Katzen graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine and completed his residency at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. Prior to founding the Institute, Dr. Katzen spent 11 years as the director of cardiovascular and interventional He is a resident of Coral?radiology at Alexandria Hospital in VA.
