Broward College received a $2.5 million donation from The Lillian S. Wells Foundation designated for the Health Sciences Simulation Center at Broward College’s A. Hugh Adams Central Campus. The Simulation Center mirrors an acute care hospital enabling students to experience real life situations using the latest medical simulation technology.$2.3 million of the gift, which celebrates three generations of the Wells family’s philanthropic support of education and healthcare, will establish the Lillian S. Wells Health Sciences Simulation Endowment to provide in perpetuity funding for maintenance, equipment and software upgrade, ensuring the technology best simulates the environments and situations experienced by healthcare professionals. The $200,000 balance is designated for the completion of the Surgical Operating Suite, including operating table upgrade, additional surgical tables, specialized instruments, refurbished anesthesia machine and a sternomy manikin for heart and lung surgical simulation.
The 66,000 square-foot Health Sciences Simulation Center offers an ambulance bay with a working ambulance to help students learn the urgency of emergency transport, medical care and intake. The second floor hospital rooms comprise a birthing suite, medical-surgical, critical care and ED room. A state-of-the-art family of manikins is very human like with blinking eyes, chest movement, heart and lung sounds, blood pressure pulses and a computerized EKG tracing. All simulated patient experiences are video recorded using a sophisticated system so students and faculty can critique their interactions and identify areas for improvement.
