Cardiovascular disease remains the number one cause of death in the U.S., with an average of one death every 40 seconds, according to the American Heart Association. Broward Health is offering a variety of events, some at no cost, during the month of February to help raise awareness on heart conditions.

BP Tuesdays – February 5, 12, 19 and 26, 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. 
Broward Health Medical Center will provide every Tuesday in February free blood pressure screenings to patients, visitors and staff in the hospital main lobby. Blood pressure, cardiac services and stroke prevention information will be provided.
 
2nd Annual Spin-A-Thon – Saturday, February 9, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Broward Health Medical Center will host the 2nd Annual Africk Family Foundation Spin-a-thon on Saturday, February 9, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The main event, the Spin-a-thon, is a four-hour, peer-to-peer fundraising event where 50 teams on 50 spin bikes will ride non-stop. The fun-filled family event will feature a Kids Zone, Massage and Stretch Zone, silent auction and food. Proceeds will benefit Broward Health Medical Center’s Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program, which provides care to more than 800 patients annually recovering from a cardiovascular or pulmonary event.
 
Community Blood Drive – Wednesday, February 13, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Donated blood remains an important and immediate life-saving resource. According to the American Red Cross, nearly five million people receive blood transfusions each year. Broward Health Medical Center will host a blood drive from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the 3rd-floor atrium.
 
National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week Community Event – Thursday, February 14, 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The Broward Health Wellness Center will provide heart-healthy nutritional information, education and prizes to patients, visitors and staff in the cafeteria from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
 
 
 
Free Cardiac Screenings – Thursday, February 21, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Broward Health Wellness Center staff will hold free blood pressure and cholesterol screenings for patients, visitors, staff and wellness center members from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
 
How to Keep Your Heart Healthy Lecture – Thursday, February 21, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Violeta McCormack, M.D., a cardiologist at Broward Health Medical Center, will present a lecture on how to keep your heart healthy. The event, aimed at raising awareness about heart disease, will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Broward Health Medical Center’s Atrium Conference Room.

Blood Pressure Screenings – Wednesday, February 7, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Blood pressure screenings will be provided at no charge to patients, visitors and staff from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 
Heart Health Screenings – Wednesday, February 13, 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Heart health screenings, including glucose and cholesterol checks, will be offered from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Attendees are asked to fast for the screening. 
Heart Healthy Lecture and Cooking Demonstration – Wednesday, February 20, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. 
Discover dishes that are good for your heart health and learn how to prepare these healthy and delicious recipes. Enjoy a cooking demonstration and sample featured dishes. Seating is limited, and reservations are required. To register, call the Broward Health Call Center at 954-759-7400, and select option 5.
 
Heart Expert Panel Discussion – Wednesday, February 27, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Join the conversation and learn how to prevent and manage heart disease with a panel of heart experts, including Kenneth Herskowitz, M.D., cardiac surgeon; Andre Landau, M.D., interventional cardiologist; and Paul Rondino, M.D., cardiologist. The event, aimed at raising awareness about heart disease for the community and staff, will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in Broward Health North’s Conference Center.

Blood Pressure & Cholesterol Screenings – February 1, 8, 15 and 22, 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
High cholesterol usually has no symptoms. A simple blood screening will shed light on your cholesterol levels and allow you to make informed decisions about your health with your physician. Screenings will be offered from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Cholesterol screenings are free; however, a cholesterol profile is $20. To register, call 954-759-7400, and select option 5. 
  
Fitness Challenge to Community & Employees

CPR Class – Thursday, February 7, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Family & Friends CPR Course teaches the lifesaving skills of CPR, AED use and relief of choking in adults, children and infants. Skills are taught in a group environment using the American Heart Association format, which provides students with the most hands-on CPR practice time possible. The class is taught by American Heart Association instructors. This course is for those interested in learning how to save a life, not for people who need a course completion card to meet a requirement. To register, call 954-759-7400 and select option 5.
 
Nutrition 101 for Life & Support Lecture – Tuesday, February 19, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Emergent Cardiovascular Conditions Lecture – Monday, February 28, 12:15 p.m. to 2 p.m. 
Would you recognize the signs of a heart emergency? Join Gary Lai, D.O., for this informative lecture and learn how men and women experience heart attack symptoms, the importance of calling 911 immediately, and current medications and treatment options that must be initiated quickly. As part of our monthly High Tea & Trivia Lecture Series, Cardiac Services manager Phyllis Ahern will provide a healthy heart lecture from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Join us for some heart healthy tips and trivia games. Refreshments and light snacks provided.
Cardiac Care Health Fair – Friday, February 22, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Learn from each department of the hospital how cardiac care affects all aspects of health. Interact with our health professionals from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Heart health screenings, lectures and nutritional education will be provided.
