Now in its 85th year, Broward Health is leading the way in medical innovations for patients, led by exceptional physicians, nurses and clinical staff. Here are some of the highlights in advancements made at Broward Health this year:
Florida’s First Genesis Robotic Magnetic Navigation System by Stereotaxis
Broward Health has been distinguished as a premier center for cardiovascular treatment, providing comprehensive clinical, surgical and rehabilitative care, and the system continues to invest in cardiac service line upgrades. The latest is the opening of an advanced robotic electrophysiology lab to treat heart rhythm disorders.
The lab, which officially opened its doors in March at Broward Health Medical Center, is the first in Florida and fifth in the nation to be equipped with the latest robotic technology for cardiac ablation procedures using the Genesis Robotic Magnetic Navigation system by Stereotaxis. The Genesis system’s robotic magnetic navigation brings the benefits of robotic precision and safety to cardiac ablation, a common, minimally invasive procedure to treat arrhythmias. Tens of millions of individuals worldwide suffer from arrhythmias – abnormal heart rhythms that result when the heart beats too quickly, too slowly, or with an irregular pattern.
This new lab is yet another example of how Broward Health has been leading the way for more than 50 years in advanced cardiac care, offering patients a full continuum of heart and vascular care, including advanced diagnostics, innovative treatments and customized cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.
Broward County’s First Single-Port Robotic Surgical System
In May, Broward Health Medical Center unveiled Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci single-port robotic surgical system, the first in Broward County. The new single-port robotic technology is the latest iteration of robotic technology that allows surgeons across multiple specialties to perform complex procedures with more camera visibility, precision and maneuverability through a single incision. The new da Vinci single port robotic surgical system will advance Broward Health’s robotic surgery offerings in head and neck trans-oral surgery and urologic surgery.
State-of-the-Art Cardiac Catheterization Lab Expands
As part of its multi-million-dollar investment in advanced cardiac care, Broward Health celebrated the opening of the second cardiac catheterization lab at Broward Health Coral Springs. The hospital’s new 4,102-square-foot bi-plane cath lab can capture two sets of images simultaneously with just one injection of contrast. The second cath lab opened less than a year after the first one opened.
Among the state-of-the-art procedures now available through the expanded cath lab include electrophysiology mapping and imaging systems, which are used to guide transcatheter cardiac ablation procedures and interventional neurovascular services, which involves advanced procedures to diagnose and treat neurologically related vascular conditions.
Broward Health Imperial Point also has a cardiac cauterization lab and interventional radiology suite and late last year received a $5.5 million donation to establish the Jacqueline J. Bernstein and Marvin H. Weiner Imaging Center and to purchase cutting-edge imaging technology including an MRI, which will enable the hospital to provide more patients with high-quality imaging.
Clinical Trials and Studies
The Broward Health Research Institute conducts the majority of its 190 current active clinical trials on the Broward Health Medical Center campus. Research specialties include adult and pediatric cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurology and sickle cell. In an unprecedented partnership with the University of Florida Health and Israel-based company Insightec, Broward Health is participating in a clinical trial that aims to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s.
