Playtime for local children with disabilities just got a whole lot more fun, thanks to the opening of three new special needs playgrounds.
In a grand opening ceremony, Broward Childrens Center and guests celebrated the unveiling of the new playgrounds and paid tribute to the community partners who made them possible.
The celebration included an awards ceremony and unveiling of the new playgrounds, complete with a demonstration by Center resident Beau, 10.
The celebration included the official naming of the United Way of Broward County and Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital playgrounds, to honor the support both organizations provided to the project.
The new adaptive playgrounds include features such as a tiered flower garden, wheelchair swing, and special surfacing to protect fragile children against falls.
The new playgrounds and a host of other maintenance and upgrade projects were begun as part of the United Way of Broward Countys 16th Annual Day of Caring on October 26, 2007. The event saw more than 600 volunteers work on the Centers new playgrounds as well as paint murals, install new equipment, and landscape Center grounds.
