December 20 2019 – Bob Costas is arguably the most accomplished broadcaster in the world today.

He’s won 28 Emmys, including awards for news, sports, and entertainment. Been the “National Sportscaster of the Year” a record eight times. Taken home the Walter Cronkite Award and earned enshrinement into two halls of fame. Costas has hosted 12 Olympic Games, seven Super Bowls, 10 NBA Finals, and nationally acclaimed programs on both television and radio.

For all that and more, Bob Costas will be the recipient of the 2020 “Joe DiMaggio American Icon Award.” He’ll be recognized by the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation at an event in his honor Friday, February 7 (6:00 p.m.), at the Signature Grand in Davie.

“Bob is one of the most respected broadcasters in history and among the best ever behind a microphone,” said Kevin Janser, senior vice president and chief development officer at Memorial Healthcare System. “We’re thrilled to recognize a truly iconic figure in broadcasting and American culture.”

Bestowed annually by the nonprofit organization, the award recognizes those who best represent the values Joe DiMaggio stood for and contributions that have influenced American society. Costas joins former U.S. President Bill Clinton, basketball’s Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Pat Riley, music’s Gloria and Emilio Estefan, major league baseball’s Derek Jeter, and best-selling author James Patterson as American Icon award winners.

“Like millions of baseball fans, I am appreciative of Joe DiMaggio’s enduring place in baseball history, and his unique place in the American imagination,” said Costas. “It was my good fortune to know Joe, and consider him a friend. With that in mind, along with the important work of the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, it is a great honor to receive this award bearing his name.”

The event also serves as a fundraiser for the foundation, which underwrites the cost of programs and services for kids and families at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. For more information or to purchase
tickets ($250), call the foundation office at 954-265-3454.
