April 11, 2022 – Two Broward County-based HCA Florida Healthcare hospitals – HCA Florida Northwest Hospital in Margate and HCA Florida Westside Hospital in Plantation – are proud to announce their incoming class of new residents and fellows into the growing graduate medical education (GME) program shared by both facilities.
This group of residents joins HCA Healthcare’s GME program as part of its incoming class of 1,867 residents and fellows. HCA Healthcare has become a significant provider of medical education with 337 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited programs, more than 5,429 residents and fellows, and 60 teaching hospitals across 14 states.
HCA Florida Northwest Hospital and HCA Florida Westside Hospital are proud to help teach the next generation of physicians through world class didactic and clinical training, and research. Both facilities’ operating rooms leverage robotic-assisted surgical technology featuring dual consoles, which provide further hands-on training.
The residents and fellows’ collective involvement in patient care not only allows the hospitals to better serve the community, but is essential to addressing the national physician shortage. Medical residents and fellows have also played a critical role in providing high-quality patient care and additional support throughout the facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
After adding two new ACGME accredited programs in 2021 (Pathology and Anesthesiology), the two hospitals in 2022 announced they have furthered their joint investment in GME with the addition of three new specialty programs including Emergency Medicine, Transitional Year and Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN).
The Emergency Medicine program will be led by Dr. Matthew Slane. The inaugural class will include 13 residents.
The Transitional Year program will be led by Dr. Paramjit Kalirao. The inaugural class will include 15 residents.
The OB/GYN program will be led by Dr. Jose Luis Terrazas. The inaugural class will include four residents.
In addition to these three new programs, the two hospitals have established ACGME accredited programs in specialties:
- Internal Medicine, the largest of the specialty programs, is led by Dr. Adekunle Bamgboye as the program director and by Dr. Pallavi Aneja and Dr. Amanda Kowalski as the associate program directors, and welcomed 15 new residents.
- General Surgery is led by Dr. Shaikh Hai as the program director and Dr. Charles Lago as the associate program director and welcomed four new residents.
- Anesthesia is led by Dr. Imani Thornton as the program director and by Dr. Angela Pierre as the associate program director, and welcomed six new residents.
- Pathology is led by Dr. Alan Shiller as the program director, and welcomed two new residents.
- Podiatric Medicine and Surgery is led by Dr. Alan MacGill as the program director and Dr. Cherison Cuffy as the associate program director at Northwest, which welcomed two new residents; at Westside, the program is led by Dr. Steven Spinner as the program director and Dr. Fredric Chussid as the associate program director, and welcomed three new residents. The Ankle and Foot fellowship program is led by Warren Windram as the fellowship director, and welcomed one new fellow.
Both Northwest and Westside last year opened new GME suites at their respective facilities, which include dedicated offices, classrooms, computer labs and living space, providing resources to support the residents and fellows as they contribute directly to patient care while furthering their medical education.
