January 30, 2023 – Dr. Michael Layton, a pulmonologist affiliated with HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital, recently completed 100 robotic-assisted bronchoscopies. The robot’s innovative technology allows physicians to access hard-to-reach areas of the lungs and collect biopsies from the smallest of lung nodules, promoting an earlier and more accurate lung cancer diagnosis.

“We are thrilled to reach this milestone achievement with Dr. Layton and the entire pulmonary and surgical team here at St. Lucie. Investing in this state-of-the-art technology allows our physicians and colleagues to provide the highest quality of care to our patients” said Jay Finnegan, Chief Executive Officer of HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital.

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. However, the number of deaths from lung cancer continue to decline, thanks to advances in early detection and treatment. “This minimally-invasive procedure has many benefits for our patients, including a shorter hospital stay and recovery, no incisions, and overall a clearer diagnosis” said Dr. Layton.
