January 18, 2021 – Just in time for American Heart Month, HCA Florida University Hospital today announced the official opening of the facility’s cardiac catheterization lab (cath lab).

The dedicated 540 square-foot suite features c-arm computed tomography that allows highly-trained physicians to use non-surgical, minimally invasive techniques and imaging guidance to check a patient’s heart and blood supply.

“Technology has advanced so that in many cases, we are able to go through a patient’s wrist to locate any narrowed or clogged arteries of the heart,” said cardiologist Dr. Henry Cusnir. “The addition of a cath lab enables us to provide an array of cardiovascular diagnostic services, which we can then use to create a personalized treatment plan for our patients. With the opening of the new cath lab, we have a complete array of cardiovascular diagnostic testing at HCA Florida University Hospital.”

X-ray images are taken during a heart catheterization as a tubed wire is passed through blood vessels up to the heart. Cardiologists are able to measure pressures within the heart, see how well the heart valves and heart chambers are working, evaluate an enlarged heart, and check for heart defects.

“An accurate diagnosis is the first step in heart and vascular care,” said HCA Florida University hospital CEO Madeline Nava. “We emphasize the importance of early detection through a range of diagnostic procedures and treatments.”

HCA Florida University Hospital’s cath lab is equipped with the latest medical technology and is available on a 24-hour elective and emergency basis.
