The world class, pioneering health care that is the signature of Miami’s renowned Jackson Health System has recently been made more readily available to a greater number of citizens of Miami-Dade County.

Jackson Health System has acquired Parkway Regional Medical Center, renaming it Jackson North Medical Center (JNMC) and completing a long-term, multifaceted expansion throughout Miami-Dade County. Jackson’s network now includes three hospital campuses – Jackson Memorial, Jackson South and Jackson North; Holtz Children’s Hospital; Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital; twelve primary care centers and two mobile vans strategically located throughout the county; two long-term care facilities; sixteen school based health clinics; a network of mental health centers, and a health maintenance organization. The addition of the 382-bed JNMC facility gives the Jackson system a more substantial presence in the north region of the county.

“As Miami-Dade County continues to grow, so do the health care needs of its residents,” says Sandy Sears, Interim Chief Administrative Officer, who has led the management team at JNMC since the acquisition. “The addition of Jackson North to the main campus hospital in downtown Miami and to Jackson South Community Hospital means that we can better serve the citizens of this county. Every resident of Miami Dade can now access Jackson’s quality services closer to home.”

Jackson North will continue as a full service, acute care hospital, bringing a range of additional services that will enhance the existing delivery of health care within the Jackson system. Those services include medical, surgical, obstetrics, pediatric and neonatal care; adult and neonatal intensive care; 24-hour emergency care; inpatient and outpatient rehabilitative care; specialized wound care; a pain and spine institute and a mental health center. Parkway Regional served the community for 40 years, and employees and physicians of the former Parkway Regional facility are being transitioned into the Jackson System.

Long term plans for Jackson North are to increase patient volume, develop new service lines, recruit specialty physicians and extend outreach efforts to the community. “Our plan for Jackson North is growth, growth, growth,” says Sears. “The volume at the hospital has already started to increase, as we expected would be the case when the name Jackson was placed on the building. Both the community and the staff have embraced the change. It is quite clear that with this acquisition there is tremendous opportunity for both growth and stability, as well as the opportunity to share in the widespread recognition that Jackson enjoys, as it relates to our mission and as a provider of the highest quality of health care services.”

The presence of Jackson North in the North Dade community rounds out the spectrum of health care services in that region, giving residents ease and convenience in meeting their health care needs. Jackson Health System also has a primary care center, several behavioral health centers, an outpatient diagnostic and specialty care center and five school-based health centers in the area.

“This is an exciting time for us,” says Sears. “We are so pleased about the increased availability of high quality care that Jackson is known for throughout the county. Our mission is to make our care available and accessible to everyone, and this latest addition helps make that a reality.”

The Public Health Trust held a ribbon cutting ceremony on December 21 to officially welcome Parkway employees and patients into the Jackson Health System.

Jackson Health System is South Florida’s largest and most comprehensive health care provider and is one of the nation’s most respected health care institutions. Its integrated delivery system is affiliated with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and cares for hundreds of thousands of patients who are residents of Miami-Dade County, regardless of ability to pay. It is governed by the Public Health Trust, a team of citizen volunteers acting on behalf of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners. It is one of the regions largest employers, with more than 11,000 employees on staff.
