Approximately 900 employees will be impacted under new labor contracts

October 5 2021 – At a virtual press conference today at 1:30 p.m., leaders from the different organizations presented that following contract negotiations with our labor unions, Jackson Health System will raise its minimum wage to $15 per hour for employees at all of its locations, which includes seven hospitals, two long-term care nursing facilities, primary care centers and clinics, urgent care centers, and Corrections Health Services. Jackson’s new three-year contracts with our SEIU, AFSCME, and CIR partners have already been approved by the Public Health Trust Board of Trustees, Jackson’s governing body, and was approved today by the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners.

The new $15 per hour minimum wage will impact approximately 900 current Jackson employees, as well as future new hires – part-time, full-time, and per diem. Among those who will benefit from this new standard are public safety personnel, environmental services workers, patient care technicians, transporters, and nutrition workers, represented by the AFSCME labor union.

“Our army of 13,000 employees have sacrificed so much these past 18 months and it is great to be able to recognize them,” said Jackson Health System CEO Carlos A. Migoya. “As one of the nation’s largest and most respected healthcare networks, Jackson is focused on retaining our workforce and that means we must compensate them fairly. By doing so, we also have a competitive edge in our recruitment efforts.”

Other terms that have been negotiated into these tentative agreements with all of Jackson’s labor unions include 3 percent cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) in April 2022 for all employees except senior leaders, as well as COLAs in 2023, and step plan adjustments for all nursing and pharmacy technicians.
