Finding quality homecare has become a challenge. To address the growing national demand, the International Longevity Center, with support from MetLife Foundation, has selected 15 colleges to receive grants for the creation of caregiver training programs. Miami Dade College (MDC), among the schools selected nationwide, is the only institution in the State of Florida to receive the grant this year. The grant will be used to launch the Elder Caregiver Educational Institute in spring 2010 at MDCs North Campus.
“This grant will not only lead to the creation of the Institute but also will continue the Colleges commitment of addressing the needs of seniors in Miami-Dade County,” said Dr. José A. Vicente, president, MDC North Campus. “An extensive curriculum targeting training in multiple languages, providing student internships and career services will be offered through the Community Education Department at the North Campus.” The Home Health Aide training program, with courses in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole, will require 75 contact hours over an 18-week period and culminates with a certificate. Students who complete the training will be work ready.
