The significant gains I made in my career were thanks in part to the knowledge, skills and connections I gained through the FIU Master of Science in Health Informatics and Analytics (MSHI&A) program. When starting the program, I had some past healthcare experience, but I lacked fundamental understanding of the Healthcare Informatics field. The MSHI&A program allowed me to learn the design and management of Health Information Systems and gain experience in project management through group projects. The culmination of the experience in the program has helped me succeed in my current role.
When I started the program, I was working for the Florida Department of Health and looking to transition into a more challenging role. The MSHI&A program helped prepare me to meet the challenges of my current role as a Data Administrator for Mednax with a curriculum that gave me practice on real-world problems. Several of the assignments with which I practiced, such as data visualization to dashboard creation, have been utilized extensively in my role. This type of industry-oriented education model allowed me to easily transition from my previous position to my current one after graduation.
The MSHI&A program allowed me to expand and foster my professional network to assist in my career growth. The professional colleagues I connected with in the program have enriched my career with job opportunities and industry connections to which I would otherwise not have access. The group projects throughout the program allowed me to introduce myself to a wide variety of individuals who have been impactful on my career and personal growth.
With a schedule of 14-months online structure, the MSHI&A program is accessible to any professional. The faculty and staff were readily accessible to me and my cohort and made sure we were given the tools to succeed.
The Career Management Services (CMS) provided by FIU’s College of Business helped individuals like myself to achieve their career goals. From resume review to information about job opportunities, CMS has the tools to provide students with the keys to success. In working with the staff, I also learned that FIU CMS provides help in choosing a major, resume writing and critiques, practice interviews, career transition and assessments, and other services to help you move your career forward. For students who are beginning their career, CMS also connects prospective students with internships to develop work experience.
FIU’s Master of Science in Health Informatics and Analytics program provides a comprehensive approach to education, and its focus on business industry skill development ensures that you are prepared for the field of Healthcare IT. The MSHI&A program set itself apart from other programs by the talent rich teaching faculty with real world work experience. I am glad to have been part of the enriched program and would recommend it to any professional.
