The opening of a new Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hospital Miramar may be indicative of a population boom. In 2005, the new Memorial Hospital Miramar opened its doors with a menu of medical services, including maternity care. Nine months later, they had registered more than 1500 births, giving them the criteria necessary to apply for neonatal intensive care services.

Now, Memorial Hospital Miramar has welcomed a new addition to its family – a $4.5 million Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that sports 10 private rooms, each decked out with the latest technology, virtually paperless medical records, and enough room for mommy and baby.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on June 26 to celebrate the grand opening of Memorial Hospital Miramar’s new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Although this unit will be able to handle babies born at 28 weeks and beyond, younger babies, and those deemed higher risk than Level II, will be transferred to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. However, the new NICU at Memorial Hospital Miramar will offer an array of other features.

  • All rooms are equipped with individual breast milk refrigerators.
  • Round-the-clock neonatology coverage
  • Specialty trained NICU Registered Nurses, 75% of which have advanced certification in High-Risk Neonatal Nursing
  • Trained Neonatal Respiratory Specialists
  • Point of Care testing for Blood Gases available within the unit to expedite respiratory care management
  • Lactation specialists, developmental and speech specialists on site
  • All care based on a Patient and Family Centered Care philosophy
