Mount Sinai Medical Center Among First in the Country to Offer Single Incision Gynecologic Surgery Using Robotic Technology

Mount Sinai Medical Center recently became one of the first facilities in the nation to perform a single incision robotic gynecological surgery. Dr. Nicholas Lambrou, Mount Sinai gynecologic oncologist, is part of a small group of surgeons in the country who has received training to perform the single-site surgery, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March.

 

Unlike traditional robotic surgeries requiring three to five small incisions, this new technology allows for a single incision in the belly button resulting in a nearly invisible scar hidden in the navel. The surgery offers minimal pain and virtually scarless results for women needing complex gynecological procedures such as hysterectomies, ovarian surgery, and removal of fibroids or cervical cancer. The scarless surgery includes the added benefits of having a surgery done robotically which include shorter recovery time, less blood loss and fewer complications.

 

During the procedure, the surgeon sits comfortably at a console, viewing 3-D, high-definition images of the patient’s anatomy. The surgeon uses controls below the viewer to move the instrument arms and camera. In real-time, the system translates the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements into more precise movements of the miniaturized instruments inside the patient.
