The employees, medical staff and administrative team at North Shore Medical Center worked tirelessly throughout 2015 to uphold their commitment to provide the community with top notch medical care.

Towards the beginning of the year, in recognition of National Doctors’ Day on March 30, the hospital paid tribute to its affiliated physicians for their service, skills and compassion. Among the many doctors recognized, Dr. Vitalie Crudu, interventional cardiologist, was honored with the “Physician of the Year” award.

North Shore Medical Center kicked off the month of May by receiving recognition in cardiac care. The hospital earned the Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Foundation’s secondary prevention guidelines. These measures included evaluation of the patient, proper use of medications and aggressive risk-reduction therapies.

Later in the month, as part of its National Hospital Week celebrations, North Shore Medical Center acknowledged three exemplary employees. Adrian Wilson-Lewis, medical transcriptionist, was named the 2015 Tenet Hero; Marie Cius, a patient care technician, was recognized as the 2015 Employee of the Year; and Frankline “Frankie” Rene, R.N., was chosen as the 2015 Nurse of the Year.

Toward the end of May and continuing into June, North Shore hosted its Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive. According to a study released by Feeding South Florida and Feeding America in 2014, there are meals missing from the tables of 15.4 percent of the South Florida population. During this weeklong initiative, 859 pounds of food were collected and donated to Pass it On Ministries, a local emergency food program.

In late June, North Shore Medical Center’s Chest Pain Center earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for demonstrating compliance with the organization’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care. The hospital is the first in the state of Florida and the ninth in the nation to achieve this certification.

In October, North Shore presented the Innovations in Cardiovascular Care 2015 Symposium, sponsored by the Tenet Florida Heart & Vascular Network at the Ritz-Carlton in Fort Lauderdale. Some of the nation’s top physicians spoke on a variety of topics, including “LVADs in the Elderly” and “Updates in Management of Advanced Heart Failure.” There was also a series of case presentations and discussions on the newest imaging modalities in cardiovascular disease.

Shortly after, the hospital paid tribute to loyal employees for their many years of service. At a special luncheon, the hospital’s administrative team thanked staff members for being part of the North Shore family for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years.

Also in October, North Shore earned the top “A” grade hospital safety score from The Leapfrog Group. More than 2,500 hospitals nationwide were evaluated and graded and only about 30 percent received an “A” score.

November brought special recognitions to Dr. Alia Abdulla for her promotion to medical director of the hospital’s surgical oncology program and Dr. Amy Jarvis for her designation as medical director of North Shore’s Primary Stroke Center. Both physicians will spearhead the expansion of their respective service lines.

Also in November, the hospital became the first in Miami-Dade County to acquire the Edge™ system for high-precision radiosurgery. This new technology gives patients a non-invasive alternative to traditional surgery by accurately targeting tumors and other abnormalities without an incision or the need for recovery in a hospital setting.

As another busy year come to an end, the physicians and staff at North Shore Medical Center looks forward to the great accomplishments that 2016 will bring.
