Alfredo Rego, MD and Sean Johnson, MD aim to expand depth of heart,
vascular and thoracic surgery services at two Broward County hospitals.

June 21, 2021 – Northwest Medical Center and Westside Regional Medical Center recently appointed cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon Alfredo Rego, MD as Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgery for their cardiovascular surgery programs. In this role, Dr. Rego will lead efforts to increase the quality and complexity of surgical interventions offered at the two hospitals. Joining him is cardiovascular surgeon Sean Johnson, MD. Together, with doctors Neil Galindez, MD and Richard Brezing, MD, the physicians will expand the depth and breadth of cardiovascular, thoracic and vascular surgery procedures available in Broward County.

Northwest Medical Center and Westside Regional recently launched a lung nodule and thoracic surgery program aimed at the early detection of lung cancer. Westside Regional Medical Center also expanded their advanced structural heart program to include minimally invasive aortic and mitral valve procedures and procedures to treat heart rhythm conditions. Under the leadership of Dr. Rego, Northwest and Westside will expand their thoracic surgery programs to include esophageal and advanced vascular procedures.

Dr. Rego has served patients in South Florida since 2003. He is uniquely able to bring advanced experience in the specialties of adult cardiovascular, thoracic and vascular surgery. Dr. Rego previously held leadership positions as the Associate Medical Director of Jackson Heart Institute and Associate Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery for Jackson Health System.

Dr. Johnson completed his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. Prior to joining HCA Healthcare, he served as a cardiothoracic surgeon with Bon Secours Mercy Health in Cincinnati. His expertise in aortic surgery and transcatheter aortic valve replacement supports Westside’s growing valve repair and replacement program.

“We are committed to excellence in cardiovascular surgery,” stated Charles Gressle, President of HCA East Florida Division. “Building upon our strong programmatic foundations at Northwest Medical Center and Westside Regional Medical Center allows us to bring a higher level of cardiovascular, thoracic and vascular surgery care to patients needing our services.”

Westside Regional and Northwest Medical Centers offer comprehensive non-invasive, interventional, and surgical cardiovascular procedures including advanced cardiac catheterizations, treatment of atrial fibrillation and other comprehensive electrophysiology procedures, treatment of structural heart disease, and open heart valve and bypass surgeries. Full-service vascular and thoracic treatment options further complement the programs.
