December 2 2019 – NSU Board of Trustee member, Zachariah P. Zachariah, M.D., was appointed to the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Advisory Council,  NSU President Dr. George Hanbury announced today. The appointment was made by Alex Azar, the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.
 
“Dr. Zachariah has been a valued public servant who has lent himself to many worthy boards and councils during his career. His service is valued, not only here at NSU but nationally as he advocates for a higher quality of health in the United States,” said Dr. Hanbury. “I am confident that the Department of Health and Human Services will benefit greatly from Dr. Zachariah’s knowledge and expertise.”
 
In this role, Dr. Zachariah will be part of a council that advises the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, the director of National Institutes of Health, and the director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute on matters relating to the cause, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart, blood vessel, lung and blood diseases. The council also reviews applications for research and research training grants and recommends funding for those that show promise of making valuable contributions to human knowledge. He had previously served on the council from 1990 to 1993.
 
Dr. Zachariah is a board-certified internal medicine and cardiology physician who specializes in cardiology, cardiac catheterization, and interventional cardiology and has performed more than 30,000 heart catheterizations and interventional procedures in Broward County. He has also co-authored several scientific papers, and participated in various clinical trials. He also serves on the Florida Board of Medicine.
He received his medical degree from the Armed Forces Medical College in India, and then completed  his residency at St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey. Dr. Zachariah completed his fellowship in cardiology and cardiac catheterization at the Cleveland Clinic Educational Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.
 
Dr. Zachariah’s term on the National Heart, Lung and Blood Advisory Council began on November 1, 2019 and will conclude on October 31, 2023.
