Miriela Alvarez takes her responsibilities as a clinical leader seriously and works to make a difference for fellow nurses, patients, and families at the children’s hospital. To that end, she is part of its Shared Governance Council and chairs the Night Shift Council.

“I enjoy training our novice nurses and helping them get comfortable with the Memorial way of doing things, since the education they receive in schools can be a little different,” said Alvarez, a nurse in the Memorial Healthcare System since 2006. “The work I do with our councils is also very important, since the night team has unique challenges that require a strong advocate.”

Alvarez points to the creation of brochures about appendicitis that offer an overview of the treatment process prior to a doctor arriving in the morning to provide additional perspective. Another recent improvement was having a supply of hearty snacks available for patients and families to eat after the kitchen closes.
