In September, HCA implemented an educational endeavor to help recruit Critical Care and Emergency Department nurses for hospitals in its East Florida Division. St. Lucie Medical Center was one of 4 program sites.
Students from Raulerson, Lawnwood and St. Lucie received a 4-6 week didactic component blending comprehensive learning styles: on-line, classroom lectures, case scenarios, and simulation. Educational content was delivered by internal and external experts in their field under the facilitation of Dawn Chiarenza, R.N.

The simulation component was performed at the Indian River State College Department of Nursing Simulation Lab, as IRSC worked in conjunction with St. Lucie Medical Center to meet the simulation needs of students. Emergency Care Nurses then continued on for another 2 weeks of didactic and simulation; addressing the emergent issues in ER care.
All students will then continue on for another 4 to 6 weeks under the direct supervision of pre-selected preceptors. This time will allow students to integrate their comprehensive learning and critical thinking skills, while having the ability to discuss the patients plan of care with an expert in their field. Having that expert preceptor to discuss the plan of care and actions has proven to be very beneficial to students as they progress in their new field of practice.
The St. Lucie Medical Center Septembers program successfully graduated 14 students from the didactic, simulation portion who are currently embarking on the 4-6 week internship.
