When asked, why a book on organization studies? Dr. Borkowski related that in 2005 when she authored her first book she wrote in the Preface “the U.S. healthcare industry has grown and changed dramatically over the past twenty-five years.” That was an understatement! In the past three years, the industry has experienced dynamic changes. The Institute of Medicine issued its report Crossing the Quality Chasm that made an urgent call to redesign the US health care system to close the “quality gap.” Pay-for-performance is now a reality firmly ensconced in the payment systems of both public and private insurers. These new initiatives are being used to increase to promote transparency and value-drive healthcare in the future. Health systems, insurers, as well as organizations in the public sector are moving forward and adopting various quality improvement programs. Healthcare managers are quickly learning what worked in the past may not (and probably wont) work in the future.
Using an applied focus, this book provides a clear and concise overview of the essential topics in organizational behavior and organization theory from the healthcare managers perspective. The goal of Dr. Borkowskis book is for the reader to gain a greater understanding of why and how people and groups behave the way they do in the workplace and how organizations behave in relationship to their environment. With this knowledge healthcare managers will be able to predict and thus effectively influence the behavior of those they lead and to lead within an organization that is structure to succeed within its environment.
By definition, an organization is a collection of people working together under a defined structure to achieve predetermined outcomes. Therefore, it makes sense to examine both organizational behavior and organization theory simultaneously since organizations affected individuals behaviors and individuals behaviors affect organizations!
