based primary care providers to raise the level of awareness of the risk of stroke in atrial fibrillation (Afib) patients. Through a summer lecture series, in partnership with National Stroke Association, the hospital’s stroke medical director, Arun Talkad, M.D., presented tools and resources to better manage patients with this cardiac diagnosis.
“It is crucial that we raise awareness of the connection between Afib and stroke with both physicians and community members, so that people with this diagnosis can better manage their health,” said Dr. Talkad. “As a primary stroke center, our role at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center is to not just treat every stroke patient that comes through our doors, but also to be a resource to help educate others on how to best manage illnesses that may lead to stroke.”
“While we know that there is a strong relationship between cardiac care and stroke prevention, there may be a tendency to underestimate the potential risk factors between the two,” said Larry Coomes, CEO. “As the first hospital to perform open heart surgery in Palm Beach County, we have always been on the forefront of cardiac care. Now, as a primary stroke center, it is our goal to better educate others on this connection in an effort to save more lives.”
