As the Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Dr. Mike Cusnir’s approach to patient care is rooted in both clinical excellence and the personal connections he builds with those he treats. Every patient is met not just with a plan, but with understanding, empathy, and a sense of hope. Originally from Colombia, he earned his medical degree at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana before completing his residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. He then specialized in hematology and oncology at the University of Maryland, serving as chief fellow during his final year. Since joining Mount Sinai in 2003, Dr. Cusnir has led numerous clinical trials, published several articles, and recently completed a fellowship in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona. As co-director of Gastrointestinal Malignancies, he treats a wide range of cancers, blending traditional and integrative therapies. Outside of patient care, Dr. Cusnir is passionate about mentoring future healthcare professionals and has been recognized as “Attending of the Year” for his outstanding impact on residents and interns.
