Our journey started in early January when Carol underwent surgery to her back. Initially, we anticipated a swift recovery, with her returning home within two to three weeks. However, after three weeks in the acute care hospital, we found ourselves extending our stay to a rehab hospital.
The time spent in the acute care hospital was an unforgettable experience. I spent most of my nights, if not all, sleeping next to Carol in a chair or a couch, providing her with constant companionship during her recovery.
The most exciting part of our journey was the transfer from the acute care hospital to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital. We made this transfer through a medical nonemergency transport service, which proved to be the most comfortable car ride Carol and I had endured in the past three weeks. In fact, when she was leaving, I couldn’t help but ask them if they would activate the lights and sirens, and they playfully laughed in response.
Upon arriving at Encompass, we were greeted by a wonderful facility that provided the perfect environment for Carol’s rehabilitation. We are hopeful that she will regain her strength and return to her normal self within a short period. We are incredibly grateful for the exceptional care and professionalism displayed by the entire staff, including the doctors, nurses, and rehab specialists.
As of now, we remain at Encompass, but we are optimistic that Carol will be discharged and able to return home within the next few weeks. In our upcoming issue next month, we will provide a more detailed account of our experiences from the very beginning until the time we finally arrived home.
