Mark Michels, M.D., FACS
Mark Michels, MD, FACS is the Founder and Managing Partner of Retina Care Specialists in Palm Beach Gardens and Stuart where he has been practicing since 1991. He is a board certified and fellowship-trained ophthalmologist in diseases and surgery of the retina, vitreous, and macula.
Dr. Michels developed the prominent research program at Retina Care Specialists where he serves as a Principal Investigator in 12 active national clinical trials and several other studies on diseases of the retina impacting people in the community. Major pharmaceutical companies recognize Retina Care Specialists as a clinical study center for national, randomized, FDA-sponsored drug trials. Involvement in clinical trials gives his patients access to university-level care for serious eye diseases to help preserve their sight. In addition, participation in clinical research provides a superior level of care by offering new treatments that patients may not otherwise have access to.
Dr. Michels is committed to individualized and compassionate care. He frequently volunteers his expert medical services at the Caridad Center where he has successfully treated many underserved patients with impaired vision due to serious eye diseases.
Dr. Michels served four terms as President of the Palm Beach County Ophthalmology Society receiving the Societys first Ophthalmologist of the Year Award. He also served as President of the Florida Society of Ophthalmology. Dr. Michels won the John Brayton Leadership Award and the Curtis Benton Outstanding Young Ophthalmologist Award. He also served as President of the Florida Society of Retinal Experts from 2004-2006. He is currently a board member at Lighthouse for the Blind.
In addition, Dr. Michels co-authored the benchmark article on Lucentis for wet macular degeneration which was published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine and was announced as the sixth most important medical publication of 2006.
