Amelia Carolina Sanchez-Norem has been a VITAS volunteer for nearly a year. As a proactive caller, she provides patients and their caregivers with schedule updates and ensures they receive the supplies they need.
Her former college professor, who was also a gerontologist, inspired her interest in the challenges seniors face in the community and the gaps in services they will experience as the U.S. population ages.
“My role as a proactive caller goes beyond a weekly call,” she says. “I become the patient’s voice to seek very much needed services.”
