Dr. Vara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.

I am an orthopedic surgeon specializing on the upper extremity. This means I do everything from the shoulder to the fingertips. I was born and raised in Miami, FL. I began volunteering at the Ryder Trauma Center in high school where my passion for surgery began. I graduated with a major in Biology and minor in Chemistry from the University of Miami. During my time there I conducted research at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and the Ryder Trauma Center. This inspired me to stay there for medical school at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. I did my orthopedic surgery residency at Beaumont Health in Michigan and a Hand to Shoulder fellowship at the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center.

Why did you join a group associated Palmetto General.

I always knew I wanted to end up back in Miami. I joined an incredible group in Orthopedic Specialists of South Florida who are a passionate, skilled team of Orthopedic Surgeons who treat most orthopedic conditions. I had various opportunities but carefully selected the best fit for my training and interests. It was not a difficult decision.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion. How do you maintain your passion? What are challenges you face doing so?
I truly believe I have the best job in the world. I provide both non-surgical and surgical options for patients with minor aches and pains to severe arm injuries. I love all medical specialties but orthopedic surgeons have a unique opportunity to correct issues. It is extremely gratifying. The biggest challenge is being able to spend as much time as is needed with each patient. Fortunately I have not found that to be an issue with my team or Palmetto General. It ratifies my career selection to practice here.

Please tell us about your practice

My subspecialty is upper extremity orthopedic surgery (conditions of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder).
My practice can be split into two general groups, acute and chronic. Acute injuries include lacerations, fractures, sprains, and tendon/ligament injuries. Chronic injuries include overuse injuries, arthritis, and tendinitis.

I try to treat patient’s as if they were my family. My job is to provide each patient with information so they can make the decision they believe is best for them. I enjoy explaining the tradeoffs between various treatments.  It amazes me how intelligent my patients are and how I can learn from them what they feel is important.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?

My primary goal will always be to provide high quality Orthopedic Surgery Hand to Shoulder Surgery. Patient outcome is the most important issue. I plan to continue attending conferences and stay on top of the latest developments in my subspecialty and hopefully continue to add to that knowledgebase as I have been fortunate to do during my training.
