Miami-Dade Police and Miami-Dade College (MDC) are partnering in bringing education and hands-on to life. Miami-Dade Police conducts its training didactically and then places the officers in various scenarios to practice their skills. During the week of July 25 – 29, 2011, a combination of law enforcement officers from various departments, gathered not only to learn about surviving the most critical hour of trauma, known as the “golden hour,” but put into practice what they learned at the end of the week in an unprecedented manner!
Miami-Dade College’s Health and Science’s Dean, Dr. Pete Gutierrez, along with Medical Center Campus President, Armando Ferrer, have made it possible for officers to practice their skills in the simulation lab, utilized by the Medical Center Campus’ students. This type of hands-on training makes it possible for officers to practice realistically and instantly obtain constructive criticism and feedback on their procedures and maneuvers. This partnership has taken training to a whole new level.
Florida, leading the nation in officers killed in the line of duty, unfortunately, brings home the fact that firepower and the threat to the law enforcement community is real. The positive aspect in this horrific statistic is that a well renowned institution, such as MDC, has taken the initiative to help law enforcement in assisting by upgrading the training so that at least the officers have a fighting chance. Trauma kit supplies are needed by the officers, so the challenge lies not only in the training that lies ahead, but the funding that needs to be secured in order to ensure that each trained officer receives one.
