July 2 2020 – Suncoast Mental Health Center, Inc (SMHC) is a leading agency on the Treasure Coast that provides psychiatric, counseling, and case management services to at-risk children, adults, and families. Recognizing their efforts in the community, the COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund and The Community Foundation Martin- St. Lucie have awarded Suncoast with a grant in the amount of $10,000. In addition to this generous act, Children’s Services of St. Lucie County and Impact 100 St. Lucie have both awarded Suncoast with grants in the amount of $5,000 and $6,247.35. All of these funds were utilized for the purchase of 24 laptops, 4 printers/scanners, and 2 webcams for our staff to be able to work remotely offering Telehealth services. Over 4,500 Telehealth sessions have been completed since the end of March, including 140 new clients during this time. This was all possible thanks to the generous support of our grant donors.
SMHC is a non-profit organization founded in 1998 by three local clinicians with a mission to provide an environment that nurtures the child, affirms the adolescent, and empowers the adults and family. Serving in all four counties along the Treasure Coast: Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Okeechobee, the organization is dedicated to community-based and family-centered care in a variety of settings that include homes, schools, and activity centers.
Due to the COVID-19 crisis, Suncoast needed to be flexible with the critical care they provide to their clients. The agency has recently implemented an innovative approach to the treatment and care provided through telecommunications technology called Telehealth Therapy. Utilizing teleconferencing and videoconferencing, Telehealth Therapy allows individuals to get the help they need while remaining in the comfort and safety of their homes. With the generous support from these three funders, SMHC was able to purchase technology required to provide Telehealth Services in both their St. Lucie County and Martin County locations. It is because of these donors’ support of SMHC and the individuals the agency cares for that Suncoast is able to continue its efforts in the community and fight to break mental health stigma.
