A graduation ceremony of the first class of students completing the International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security, Basic Security Officer course recently took place. Following the ceremony, refreshments were served and a job fair was held for the graduates, sponsored by the South Florida Hospital and Healthcare Association.
The International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security course provides an in-depth training for Security Officers, preparing them for careers in a hospital or healthcare setting. It addresses security officer responsibilities in areas such as: pharmacy/ narcotics; emergency room procedure; crisis intervention; infant abduction; and other special healthcare needs.
Students were recruited from area hospital security departments and from the Broward County Workforce One offices. The demand for well trained healthcare security officers far exceeds the supply. Therefore, recruiting is underway for a second class being scheduled in June The entire program is funded through a government grant secured by WorkForce One, Broward County, and administered by the South Florida Hospital and Healthcare Association. There is no cost to the student, including the additional training to obtain the required Class “D” license following the IAHSS course.
