The state-of the-art Maroone Cancer Center at Cleveland Clinic Florida opened to patients nearly two years ago, bringing together a collaborative, multidisciplinary team of specialists to provide a full spectrum of medical and surgical treatment options to patients with cancer. Our care model combines the most innovative treatment and diagnostic technologies with a holistic approach to compassionate patient-centered care — always putting the patient’s best interest first.

Advanced Cancer Technology
The Varian Edge™ Radiosurgery Suite is one of the major investments in technology available to patients at the Maroone Cancer Center. As the first hospital-based center in the Southeast U.S. to implement the Varian Edge technology, Cleveland Clinic Florida is at the forefront of treating complex tumors in a highly accurate and efficient fashion. The Varian Edge allows our specialists to perform high-precision radiosurgery with sub-millimeter accuracy as a non-invasive alternative to traditional surgery. With the highest dose-rate on the market, Edge radiosurgery is completed in a fraction of the time compared to other technologies, improving the patient tolerance and experience.

Edge radiosurgery is completed in the outpatient setting with no need for a hospital stay. We have treated many types of tumors including both malignant and benign tumors involving the brain, spine, lung, liver, pancreas, bone, head and neck, and prostate. Tumors which are considered impossible or dangerous to remove with surgery can now be treated successfully with the Edge.

The Edge radiosurgery suite also monitors and compensates for patient or tumor motion through advanced imaging and real-time motion tracking technologies. It is able to adjust to even the slightest movements that could impact procedure accuracy, such as respiratory motion which occurs during breathing for patients with lung, abdominal, and breast cancers.

Where traditional radiosurgery typically takes 45 to 60 minutes or more, Varian Edge radiosurgery can usually be completed in 20 minutes or less. This is crucial, as studies have shown that faster treatments improve the accuracy of radiosurgery treatment delivery.

Technology in the Right Hands
Technology alone cannot fight cancer. The Maroone Cancer Center brings together a large team of experienced professionals who understand how to harness the power and precision of radiosurgery so patients gain the most benefit. The complexity involved in delivering radiation with powerful equipment like the Varian Edge requires having the right people in place to accurately target cancerous tissue while protecting the surrounding healthy tissue.

The first step in each patient’s radiosurgery plan is a discussion of the case at one of Cleveland Clinic Florida’s eight tumor boards, which is comprised of multidisciplinary specialists who discuss treatment options and decide on the best treatment approach for each patient. For Varian Edge treatments, licensed radiation therapists, dosimetrists and medical physicists work with physicians in a team approach to develop an individualized radiosurgery plan and perform multiple quality assurance tests, ensuring that radiation is delivered precisely. This level of attention continues in real-time throughout a patient’s actual treatment session.

Our mission is to provide exceptional patient-centered cancer care using the most innovative technologies delivered by the most compassionate care team. Each year Cleveland Clinic Florida treats thousands of patients with cancer from across South Florida as well as those who travel here from around the world.
