A former bedside nurse on a pediatric hematology oncology unit, Melissa Vega made the transition to case management four years ago and has found the position to be much different than what people usually expect.
“We influence patient flow at the hospital, work with the revenue department, and have to be in tune with the social needs of patients after discharge,” said Vega, now in a supervisor’s role. “In that respect, it’s critical we understand what community resources are available to access in the tri-county area.”
Vega believes critical and creative thinking, time management, and the ability to prioritize tasks are the keys to having success in the case manager’s role. She is grateful for a supportive team at Memorial Hospital Pembroke and appreciates the homey feel within the facility, as well as the overall culture with Memorial Healthcare System.
