January 23, 2020 –  Recently, members of the executive teams at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital (CCRIH) and the Cleveland Clinic Florida Region volunteered for activities associated with the relocation of the United Against Poverty of Indian River County’s UP Center.

Their new 46,000-square-foot building will allow the organization to consolidate its programs and provide additional space to host collaborating partners. The “New UP Center” is located in the historic Main Street area of Vero Beach directly east of the Indian River County Administration Center at 1400 27th Street. The volunteers from CCIRH and the Florida Region assisted with labeling all equipment, furniture and store shelving at the new facility with identification tags.

In addition, the volunteers broke into teams and packed UP’s emergency food pantry at the current location to prepare for moving. They stocked shelves at UP’s member share grocery program, organized food and household products and assisted program members with locating items. Several teams assembled furniture and items that had been donated for sale in UP’s marketplace thrift shop.

The New UP Center grand opening celebration takes place on Saturday, January 25 at 9:30 a.m. and will include children’s activities, live music and refreshments immediately following the ribbon cutting.

About UP
Since 2003, United Against Poverty’s mission is to provide those living in poverty a pathway to economic self-sufficiency. The reason UP exists is to inspire and empower people living in poverty to lift themselves and their families to economic self-sufficiency.  Fundamentally, UP believes that providing people in need a “Hand Up” is the proper path to empower individuals to break the cycle of poverty.   This is a philosophical alternative to “one-way” giving, a model that has done little to impact poverty during the last 50 years. UP does this through crisis care, case management, transformative education, food and household subsidy, employment training and placement, and personal empowerment training.
