A new patient care and ambulatory surgery center has opened its doors in Naples, Florida, serving as the flagship Gulf Coast location for the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. The facility will accommodate the dramatic growth that has taken place in the community and help Bascom Palmer continue to expand the services and level of care offered to patients.

Gresham, Smith and Partners, along with ophthalmology expert Julio Ripoll, provided architectural design, space planning, site planning, construction administration, and interior design services for the project. Architect Luis J. Cano, AIA, described the impact of the new space: “Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is an internationally recognized ophthalmology practice, and they desired an iconic, contemporary facility that reflects their industry-leading reputation and cutting-edge practices. GS&P’s design supports their growing presence in Florida with eye-catching, high-tech, amenity-rich features.”
The new center includes 20 examination rooms, an imaging suite, optical services and physicians’ offices. A full surgical suite with two operating rooms and associated preparation and recovery areas will soon be available. The 20,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art center will provide clinical space for the treatment of virtually all eye diseases, including macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and pediatric eye disorders.

The building’s exterior design features a series of interlocking shapes formed by transparent glass paneling that allows for natural light and views of the local landscape. Designers also incorporated glass throughout the interior, representing visibility and transparency, while other modern features are inspired by the reflection and refraction of the human eye. Air control, light control and window roller shades are all tied into a central computer system that helps minimize the facility’s environmental impact, and the design team incorporated plenty of local materials. Bascom Palmer and GS&P are proud to announce that the facility is expected to receive at least LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, making it a regional standout for sustainability and energy efficiency.
