The Gintel Family Foundation has donated $1 million as the lead gift in the Mariners Hospital eICU LifeGuard Endowment Fund. This bequest is the largest contribution to the hospital in its 48-year history.

The $1 million donation from the Gintel Family Foundation will serve as seed money for the endowment fund, which will be fully funded at $4 million. Money in the fund will earn interest and continue to grow in the foundations investment pool. Each year income from the fund will subsidize the operations of the Mariners Hospital eICU LifeGuard system. The system enables critical care physicians and nurses located at Baptist Health South Floridas LifeGuard Clinical Operations Center in Doral, more than 60 miles from Mariners, to electronically monitor the medical condition of patients in Mariners critical care unit 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Doral staff watches a bank of computer screens that display vital signs, lab and X-ray reports and other patient information. If there is a change in a patients condition, the Doral staff alerts Mariners Hospital eICU nurses so they can take action at the patients bedside. The LifeGuard system improves the care of patients by catching complications before they become life threatening.
