Holy Cross Hospital Recalls A Decade of Service

During its decade of covering the healthcare industry, South Florida Hospital News has reported medical advances in treatment as well as the expansion of local services, many of which occurred at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale. The following represent a few of those highlights.

 

Pioneering Medical Advances

• Earlier this year, we were the first in Florida to perform a paravalvular leak closure using a transapical approach.

• In 2012, the cardiology team at Holy Cross Hospital successfully performed the first transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR) in Broward County. The implantations are now done transfemorally and transapically.

• In 2012, Holy Cross Hospital was the first in Broward to offer MAKOplasty® Total Hip Replacement, a surgeon controlled robotic arm-assisted procedure designed to support the surgeon’s ability to more accurately align and position the implants specific to a patient’s anatomy. This builds upon seven years of Holy Cross being the first in the world to offer MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing for patients suffering with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis of the knee.

• In 2006, we were the first in Florida to use the Prime ECG Vest with 80-leads, which, in select patients, provides additional data beyond a traditional electrocardiogram.

• In 2007, Holy Cross was the first in its county to offer induced hypothermia, which has been shown to increase the odds of surviving cardiac arrest and improve neurological outcomes.

• One of our many technological advances came three years ago when we were the first in the state to utilize the Philips Brilliance iCT 256-slice scanner to offer cardiac CT angiography, delivering faster and clearer images with less radiation.

 

Opened in 2007, the nearby Holy Cross HealthPlex is now home to the Holy Cross Orthopedic Institute, Physicians Outpatient Surgery Center, Diagnostic Imaging Services, Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Program and the Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center.

 

Completed this year, the 55,000-square-foot Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center provides services in a healing, spa-like environment and offers advanced breast imaging including digital mammography, minimally invasive diagnostic procedures, stereotactic breast biopsy, bone density studies and ultrasonography. The caring environment includes a medical spa, meditation chapel and healing garden, physician offices, lifestyle counseling rooms, health education lobby, and a café and teaching kitchen.

 

Later this month, Holy Cross Hospital will open its first Urgent Care & Imaging Center. The 7,965-square-foot clinic will be open seven days a week with extended hours. The center will provide walk-in comprehensive medical services as well as diagnostic imaging services including CT scans, MRIs, digital x-rays and ultrasounds.

 

In 2003, Holy Cross Hospital was the first facility in Broward County to receive Magnet Status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Holy Cross has achieved recertification by meeting standards for clinical competence and assessment, education, cultural diversity and collaboration.

 

Last year, Holy Cross Hospital became the first hospital in Broward County to offer Schwartz Center Rounds®, a regular forum for our Associates to openly and honestly discuss the most challenging emotional and social issues that arise in caring for patients and their families.

 

Recognizing that the national reimbursement system is shifting from a volume centric model to one based on performance where healthcare providers are held accountable for outcome and efficiency, Holy Cross created Holy Cross Physician Partners at the end of 2011. Led by and comprised of independent community physicians and those employed by the Holy Cross Medical Group, this clinically integrated network has grown to more than 270 doctors, both primary care and specialists, in Broward and Palm Beach counties. It is currently participating in the Florida Blue Accountable Care Program.
