According to the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, health information professionals are expected to be in high demand through 2026, as the health sector continues to expand. The need for health services is likely to increase as the population ages, the employment of health information technicians is projected to grow 13 percent, faster than the average for all occupations. The U.S. Department of Labor indicates that the Health Information Technology (HIT) field will expand to encompass new support positions, including mobile support adoption positions, public health informatics, implementation support specialists, and information management redesign specialists. As health information technology (HIT) expands and becomes widely adopted throughout the United States, trained personnel in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) profession will be essential components at various health care facilities and physician offices.
Miami Dade College is a known leader in addressing the needs of the healthcare community it serves and is dedicated to preparing students for the ever-changing healthcare workforce. The Medical Campus of Miami Dade College offers three fully accredited health information programs. These include an Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology (HIT), as well as two short-term programs — Health Informatics Specialist and a Medical Coder/Biller Specialist. These programs are all strategically designed to allow working professionals the opportunity to pursue an affordable and convenient high-quality education in health information.
The Associate of Science (AS) in HIT prepares students for employment in acute care facilities, extended care facilities, nursing homes, clinics, and physician offices. The primary goal of the program is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for becoming self-directed learners who can communicate effectively, problem-solve and think critically in the dynamic and rapidly changing health information technology profession. With its very highly trained and dedicated team of faculty, Miami Dade College is at the forefront of preparing a skilled workforce of healthcare professionals in the Health Information Technology profession. Graduates of the Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology gain a continuum of technical, supervisory, and management skills necessary to meet workforce needs and labor market projections for Health Information Technology professionals.
In addition to the Associate of Science degree, the Medical Campus of Miami Dade College offers the Health Informatics Specialist and Medical Coder/Biller Specialist short-term programs, which both lead to a career pathway toward the Associate of Science in Health Information Technology. The college credit certificate in Healthcare Informatics prepares students for employment in various healthcare settings where the electronic health record is being implemented or maintained. The Medical Coder-Biller program prepares students in coding, classifying, indexing diagnoses and procedures for standardization, retrieval, statistical analysis, and improving overall efficiency. Students are also trained to prepare and file insurance claim forms for reimbursement.
Students who complete all program/course requirements toward the college credit certificate in Healthcare Informatics or the short-term certificate in the Medical Coder-Biller program are eligible to apply specific college credits toward the Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology (HIT). This offers two stable career pathways to an AS degree in HIT.
