For more than 45 years, Palmetto General Hospital has been serving the growing needs of the Miami-Dade and South Broward communities. In 2016, the hospital continued its tradition of delivering acclaimed care and expanding its services to better serve its patients. Some of this year’s highlights include:

Innovative Device for Patients with Mitral Valve Disease
Palmetto General Hospital introduced the minimally invasive MitraClip device as an option for patients suffering from mitral regurgitation (MR). MR is a debilitating, progressive and life-threatening disease in which a leaky mitral valve causes a backward flow of blood into the heart. The condition can raise the risk of irregular heartbeats, stroke and heart failure, which can be deadly. MitraClip, made by Abbott Vascular, repairs the mitral valve without the need for an invasive surgical procedure.

First in Florida to Implant New FDA-Approved Sutureless Aortic Valve
Palmetto General Hospital is the first hospital in Florida and third in the United States to commercially implant a sutureless aortic valve in a patient with heart valve disease through a newly FDA-approved, minimally invasive delivery system. The advanced EDWARDS INTUITY Elite valve system is a deployment device that incorporates some elements of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), a minimally invasive valve replacement procedure. The system is designed to streamline complex aortic valve replacements and result in less trauma to the body and quicker recovery times.

Robotic Surgery Program Expands with the New da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System
Palmetto General Hospital upgraded its robotic-assisted technology with the new da Vinci Xi Surgical System. This system can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for multi-quadrant surgeries in the areas of gynecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery.

Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Center
The hospital earned recognition from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association (AHA)/American Stroke Association (ASA) as meeting The Joint Commission’s standards for Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification. As one of only two in South Florida and four in the state with this distinction, the hospital is part of an elite group of providers focused on complex stroke care.

Top Honor for Stroke Care
Palmetto General Hospital, part of the Advanced Neuroscience Network (ANN), earns the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll-Elite Plus. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to providing the most appropriate stroke treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

Top Score for Patient Safety
By achieving an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, Palmetto General Hospital received recognition as one of the safest hospitals in the United States. The Leapfrog Group, a national patient safety watchdog, assigns “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” and “F” letter grades to hospitals nationwide and provides the most complete picture of patient safety in the U.S.
