The desire to attend to those in acute emergency situations, regardless of their status or ability to pay, is what attracted Dr. Juan Villegas to both emergency medicine and Memorial Healthcare System.
“As a young physician, I wasn’t someone who wanted to start my own practice, since insurance coverage and the business side of medicine didn’t excite me,” said Dr. Villegas, who first joined Memorial in 2007. “I love the fast-paced, unpredictable circumstances that challenge our teams to deliver the best possible outcomes.”
Dr. Villegas says it takes a specific type of doctor to thrive in such a pressure-packed environment. “The physician should know a lot about many medical specialties, since our work includes all diseases and critical care. We also need to process information quickly, act decisively and be able to get patients to a better clinical state.”
