Mark Chibis likes to joke that he is a “professional volunteer.” His work has taken him around the world responding to disasters, serving in war-torn regions and supporting anti-human trafficking efforts.
Chibis continues that mission locally as a volunteer at Broward Health North, where he has served for the past 15 years and where his wife once worked as a nurse. He often volunteers on the long-term care floor, supporting ventilated patients with neurological deficits, as well as in PACU surgical units and hospice.
“These are real people, not just patients or a number,” he said.
Chibis is also involved in the hospital’s organ procurement efforts, serving as a compassionate liaison for families during the emotional donation process. One of the most powerful moments is the Walk of Honor, a solemn procession from the ICU to the operating room that honors the gift of organ donation.
For Chibis, it is another opportunity to bring comfort, dignity and humanity to those facing profound loss.
